Animated films are a special direction of cinema, which allows you to realize both entertainment and gives free rein to the director's imagination. If in Hollywood the authors do not experience any limitations in the technical means to implement their ideas, making them as "universal" as possible, having guaranteed support in the market, then creators from other countries, independent animation studios, have to seek their fortune by trying to occupy a certain category, implementing individual original ideas.
On October 31, the Volga company presented the film directed by Carlos Medrano "Selma in the Ghost Town" (eng. Salma's big wish), which arrived in our rental from faraway Mexico, at the themed Halloween Saints at the CinemaCity cinema. So, what will surprise us, say, a rather exotic film school?
In a small Mexican town, the Day of the Dead comes - at this time, the spirits of the dead descend to the living relatives - everyone can summon them by placing one of the memorabilia on the ritual altar. Only Selma is unlucky - she was "thrown" into someone else's family, and she dreams of finding her parents. When a girl turns sixteen, she goes on a journey with her named brothers, Pedro and Jorge; on this day they will enter the world of the other world, which is more fun than scary, which will reveal many secrets...
The tape has a rather long "introductory part", and it looks somewhat drawn out, and let's say, formulaic. Then, when we really get to the ghost town - although, rather, the "living" incarnation of the "Day of the Dead" (excuse the pun) - yes, this is the universe of a Mexican holiday, not scary and witty, where ghosts return to their relatives, and in the city itself we see a number of animated "Calavera" (drawings where skeletons act out everyday scenes). In general, it is interesting that this is the first picture of fairy-tale universes in my memory in general, in which Death acts as a positive character, which only fulfills a natural mission and helps to renew the world, gives the opportunity to future people to enjoy the joys of life.
The graphics level is only a basic acceptable one, mostly with static backgrounds, and which also becomes more interesting as the narrative develops and the characters are filled. And separately, of course, about the heroes - as in every story, they "evolve": Selma learns about the ambiguity of life, Pedro and Jorge learn bravery, and the sorcerer professor finds lost love...
As a conclusion. Actually, for a sophisticated viewer, "Selma ..." will look too simple, however, in terms of originality and the embodiment of no standard Mexican legends, the tape will interest a small viewer for whom it was created, and an adult will encourage to discover a layer of Mexican culture.
